Celebrating Birth Mothers on National Birth Mother’s Day

By Eric Somarriba

Every year, on the second Sunday of May, we celebrate Mother’s Day and honor all mothers, whether biological or not. What isn’t as well known is Birth Mother’s Day, which takes place on the day before Mother’s Day each year. It’s a day put in place to specifically celebrate and support birth mothers. If you’re a birth mother, then it’s understandable to be feeling many complex emotions on Mother’s Day. Some may feel bittersweet, while others feel intense grief and sadness. That’s why we are here to explain Birth Mother’s Day and how you can take part in it.

Adoption Choices of Florida is a licensed adoption agency dedicated to supporting birth mothers during and after their Florida adoption. We don’t save our support for one day of the year. We dedicate ourselves year-round to our birth mothers. Life is rarely the same after adoption, and we want to make sure you’re back on track for the future. We’ll show you some ways you can mark this occasion and celebrate yourself and others.

What is Birth Mother’s Day?

As stated, Birth Mother’s Day is a day to honor, celebrate, and show solidarity for birth mothers of all kinds. Birth Mother’s Day was first established in 1990 by a group of birth mothers. The group wanted to show support for other women who had been in similar circumstances. They felt that many would overlook and stigmatize birth mothers, and wanted to set a day of recognition.

While not as mainstream as Mother’s Day, many adoption agencies today encourage the acknowledgment of Birth Mother’s Day. Birth mothers play a large role in the lives of anyone involved in the adoption process and deserve recognition. Many went through difficult circumstances and made tough choices during their adoption, and it’s worth paying tribute to them.

How Should I Celebrate Birth Mother’s Day?

There’s no one way to celebrate any holiday or special day. People can even celebrate holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving differently due to their own traditions and feelings. Naturally, this is true for Birth Mother’s Day, and this can vary depending on your circumstances as a birth mother. For some birth mothers, it may be a day of quiet reflection and still grappling with feelings like grief. Others may feel more celebratory and acknowledge what for them was a positive choice for themselves and their baby. How exactly you want to acknowledge this day is up to you, but here are some potential examples.

If, in your adoption plan, you’ve chosen open adoption and have a relationship with your child, try celebrating with them. A positive relationship with your child and their adoptive family means you can potentially treat this similar to Mother’s Day. While you aren’t parenting them directly, open adoption means you can still have a valuable presence in each other’s lives. Birth Mother’s Day can be a time to celebrate and honor that connection you have. Depending on the specifics of your communication with the adoptive family, what you can do may vary. It could be an entire in-person visit or something small like an exchange of cards.

If you have a closed adoption or otherwise don’t feel particularly celebratory, there’s more you can do. Whatever you feel on this day is perfectly valid, and no one can determine what you should feel or do. Other things you may consider doing could be contacting a birth mother support group. On this day, you could come together and share your stories and advice. You could also simply do an activity you enjoy and take time to care for and honor yourself.
