If you have a transracial adoption along with open adoption, you might be thinking of ways to celebrate Black History Month with your child and the adoptive family. It can be hard to come up with ideas for this, but Adoption Choices of Florida is here for you. We have some ideas and activities to help you plan and celebrate this month with your child and the adoptive family.
One of the activities you can all do together plans an outing to an African American museum. This will show the adoptive parents that you support their culture, and you want your child to learn more about their culture and learn about things they necessarily can not learn at home. This is a great way to celebrate Black History Month and spend time with your child and the adoptive family. This also allows you to bond more with your child and the adoptive family.
For this activity, you can do it if you are looking to get a gift for your child and the adoptive parents, or you can take them out to dinner. Supporting blacked owned businesses is a good way to celebrate Black History Month. If you want to take the adoptive parents and your child out for food, you can take them to a black-owned restaurant. You all can have a nice meal, and you can also learn about their culture more.
Another activity you can all do is attending Black History Month events in your local area. These events can be beneficial for both you and your child and the adoptive family. You can all attend to show your support and learn more about the culture and history of this month. As you show your support and learn more about this month’s history, you will also be furthering your relationships with your child and the adoptive family.
Another activity you can do with your child and the adoptive family is get together and watch a movie on black history or with prominent black characters. If your child is on the younger side, then a movie with a prominent black character or characters might be better. These movies can help demonstrate to your child how far African Americans have come and how they have moved up in the world. If you all decide on a documentary, it will provide your child with more of the history of the culture. Again this is another opportunity to bond and further your relationship with the adoptive family and your child.
Celebrating Black History Month with the adoptive family and your child can be beneficial. For instance, you can learn more about the adoptive family’s culture and black history in general. As mentioned before, doing activities and attending events this month can help further your relationship with the adoptive family and your child. Doing these things also shows the adoptive family that you support them and their culture. It lets them know that you also trust them to raise your child and provide them with a loving home. This is more implied while you are spending time with them.
You went through the Florida adoption process and created an adoption plan that you thought was best for both you and your child, which led you to transracial adoption. Transracial adoptions are very special for both you and the adoptive family. You get to learn about the adoptive family’s culture as long as you have an open adoption. This month you can learn more about their culture and show that you support them.
