Empowering Birth Mothers: Taking Control of Your Florida Adoption Journey

By Eric Somarriba

As a birth mother considering adoption, it’s understandable to feel like many things are out of your control. This can include an unplanned pregnancy you may be facing, and you’re wondering what to do now. If you’re considering adoption, then it’s understandable to wonder how much say you have in the many upcoming choices. We want to assure you that in the adoption process in Florida, you have true control over your journey. You create your adoption plan which defines the many details of your adoption. The final say on the adoptive family that will adopt your child ultimately goes to you as well. Those are just a few of the ways you will have control over your adoption, and we’re here to explain the rest.

Adoption Choices of Florida is a licensed adoption agency that puts birth mothers in charge of their adoption journey. Our goal is to support you and make sure you’re confident in your adoption. We’re here to help with the big decisions, but ultimately it’s you who is in the driver’s seat.

Your Adoption Plan

The adoption plan defines the entire adoption process and its many details. It’s the first major step in the adoption process and you’re in charge of it. It can feel overwhelming, but we have adoption professionals who can help provide information and consult you on decisions. They’re there to help you and not to influence any of your decisions. Your choices and needs are what go into the plan, our job is to make your desires happen. Below we’ll go into more detail about the different ways you are in control of your adoption.

The Adoptive Family

One of the primary jobs of the adoption plan is to find the adoptive family you want for your child. In your plan, you create the ideal picture of the family you want. No detail is too small, it’s about what you want for the life of your child. You can specify aspects such as their family makeup, religion, ethnicity, and more. Once you have your ideal vision, we try to find families that match your wishes. While we try our best, it’s important to know there may not always be an exact match. Every family is different and not every detail may line up in the end. As such,  you may have to keep an open mind on certain details. We’ll present you with the profiles of families we think are a good match. You can look over them, and potentially directly meet with them if you want. The final decision on who you choose is entirely yours, and we’ll work to find a family you trust. Once you choose a family, you also decide on how much communication you want for the rest of the process.

The Adoption Type

Another big decision that’s yours is the type of adoption you go through with. There are three different adoption types that determine the level of contact, if any, you’ll have with your child. Open adoption means you’ll have contact with your child and their adoptive family throughout their lives. Semi-open adoption is similar but has more restrictions depending on the boundaries you and the adoptive family settle on. Closed adoptions mean you’ll have no contact with your child and the adoptive family at all. This choice can have a great impact on the rest of your life, and it’s entirely yours. Maybe you still want a relationship with your child, or instead, you’ll have greater peace without it. There is no right or wrong answer. What you decide on is valid no matter which route you select.

Support Options for Birth Mothers Choosing Adoption

Depending on your current circumstances, you may need certain avenues of support during your pregnancy. This is another part of the adoption plan where you can specify the adoption services and support you need. There are many local resources that work with Florida adoption agencies, along with our own support options. If you need it, we can connect you with or provide financial assistance, housing, food assistance, and more. One of our resources is the counseling we can offer. You can receive emotional support and we can also connect you with support groups for further help.

Another part of the plan is your birth plan. This is the process that you’ll go through when giving birth that you can also define. It includes aspects like who you want with you in the hospital and the amount of time you want with your child. As always, these decisions are yours as we’re here to ensure it all goes to plan.
