Help, I’m Pregnant, I Already Have Kids, Can I Give My Baby Up for Adoption?

There is this whole image of what adoption should be. Many people think it is just a case of teen pregnancy, who no longer want their baby anymore. That couldn’t be the furthest from the truth. The image the media gives is nowhere close to what adoption really is. The truth is much simpler than that and much more heartwarming. If you are a woman who is pregnant, who is considering placing your child up for adoption, know that you can choose adoption no matter how old you are or what your circumstances are. If adoption is right for you, we at Adoption Choices of Florida are ready and willing to help you through the adoption process.

Giving Your Baby Up for Adoption When You Already Have a Family

You may be wondering if that includes you. Maybe you already have a family and another kid just simply isn’t doable right now. You have your hands full with a child or children already, a job, a spouse, or just life, and you can’t raise another child right now. You aren’t alone in this. That is the first thing you should know. You are not alone in being where you are right now.

The demographic for adoption isn’t what you might think it is. The vast majority of women that choose adoption aren’t teenagers at all. They are women who are in their 20s to 30s, and some of them have families already. It’s not exactly what the media says it is, but that is more than okay.

The answer to if you can choose adoption if you already have a family, in case it wasn’t clear, is yes, you can. There is nothing stating you can’t. Just because you choose, adoption doesn’t mean you are a bad mom. Choosing adoption is choosing a hard path to walk down, and it comes with its own set of challenges.

What to Think About When You Are Considering Adoption

Even though you can choose adoption while you have a family, there are things to consider before you do. Like with any big life choice, you have to weigh out the options and consider both sides of the equation.  Simply put, adoption isn’t right for everyone, and that is okay. There is nothing that states that everyone has to consider it.

What do you consider, though, when looking at adoption. We’ve made a list to ask yourself, and it may help you organize your thoughts during a stressful time. Take your time and ask yourself these questions:

  • Can you afford to raise another child right now?
  • Would another child make it difficult to do things you want or things you need?
  • How does your spouse, if you have one, feel about adoption?
  • If you have to take off work, will your work allow it?
  • Do you have support to help raise a child if needed?
  • Will you have to put your work or dreams on hold for a new baby?

This isn’t a full list of what you could ask yourself, but it is a start. If you answered no to a few of these questions, then adoption could be the right path for you.

If you have a spouse, then talk with them about what you are feeling. Maybe you could raise another child, but if you can’t, then that is okay. Talk to them and ask how they feel about adoption. If they aren’t informed, then send them to us, and we can help them with any questions they have. The most important part that you consider is that you don’t do any of this alone.

You already know that pregnancy can be hard and often exhausting. You don’t need to go through the adoption process alone because of that. If you can get your spouse or other family members on board, you have a support system that is one key part of adoption.  On the off chance, you don’t get that support. We will support you through this adoption journey.
