What Does a Semi-Open Adoption Mean in Florida?

By Kyla Helwig

If you are a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, adoption may be a choice you want to pursue. Unfortunately, an unplanned pregnancy can be challenging to deal with. Still, adoption gives birth mothers the option to provide for their children without placing their lives on hold to take on the responsibilities of becoming a mother. Choosing to place your baby for adoption will require you to form an adoption plan. Through this adoption plan, you will partner with Adoption Choices of Florida and make a series of decisions that will determine your child’s future. One of your choices is the type of adoption you would like to pursue. There are three different types of adoption, and Adoption Choices of Florida is here to define these choices for you so you will be prepared to choose as you make your adoption plan

What are the Three Types of Adoption?

The three types of adoption each have unique benefits and challenges, and each birth mother decides which type of adoption will be best for their child. Here are definitions of each kind of adoption:

  1. Open Adoption: In an open adoption, birth mothers can maintain extensive communication with their child as they grow up. In open adoptions, birth mothers can choose the future adoptive parents of their child. In many cases, birth mothers will also be able to visit their child in person as their child grows up. If you’re a birth mother who wants to be involved in your child’s life, this may be the best option.
  2. Closed Adoption: In a closed adoption, you won’t be able to choose the adoptive parents. Nor will you be involved in your child’s life as they grow up. Additionally, your child won’t know who you are.
  3. Semi-Open Adoption: In a semi-open adoption, birth mothers will still be able to choose the adoptive parents for their child. However, they won’t be as involved in their child’s life as they grow up. They will still be able to receive updates about the child as they grow. This option is often ideal because it allows birth mothers to stay involved in their child’s life without disrupting their bond with their adoptive parents.

Why Choose a Semi-Open Adoption in Florida?

Semi-open adoption will allow you to receive updates on your child as they grow up. Birth mothers often choose to pursue adoption because they are unable to parent. So semi-open adoptions are a great way to know what is happening throughout your child’s life without completely cutting ties.
