Things You Need to Know about Unplanned Pregnancy and the Adoption Process for Pregnant Women

Are you currently experiencing an unplanned pregnancy? If you are, are you unsure of what your options are? Here, at Adoption Choices of Florida, we can help you make a decision regarding your pregnancy while ensuring that your needs are met, and you and your baby are cared for. Here are a few things you need to know about an unplanned pregnancy and the adoption process.

What are My Options?

You have three options if you are facing an unplanned pregnancy: parenting, termination of pregnancy, or adoption.

  • Parenting- Although you didn’t plan this pregnancy, you may decide after much deliberation that you can provide for a child for 18 years. This is a great option if you decide that you are emotionally, physically, and financially capable of caring for a child.
  • Termination of Pregnancy- Depending on how far you are in your pregnancy, terminating your pregnancy may be an option. In Florida, abortion is legal up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Adoption- Placing your baby for adoption is another great option available to you. We provide financial assistance, emotional support, and aid during and after your pregnancy.

Unplanned Pregnancy and the Adoption Process in Florida

According to our website, “approximately 45% of the 6 million pregnancies are unexpected.” Women from all walks of life experience unplanned pregnancies, so you are definitely not alone. If you decide that an FL adoption is the right choice for you and your baby, we have adoption counselors readily available to assist you with all of your needs.

Your first step is to contact us at Adoption Choices of Florida. We are available 24/7 via phone or chat to assist.

Next, you have to develop your personalized adoption plan. There are three things you need to decide about your adoption. These three things include deciding on the types of adoption you want, picking your child’s adoptive family, and how much or how little financial assistance you need.

There are three different types of adoption: open, semi-open, and closed. Open adoptions involve open communication between you and the adoptive family. In this type of adoption, you will receive intermittent updates about the child. These updates can include photos, phone calls, and/or annual meetings. Semi-open adoptions consist of mediated communication between you and the adoptive family. You will still receive photos or letters, but all of this will be disseminated through your adoption advisor. There is no communication whatsoever in a closed adoption. The only information your child’s adoptive family will receive about you is your medical history.

In an open and semi-open adoption, you will be able to choose your child’s adoptive family. We will give you adoptive family profiles, and you will choose your child’s adoptive family based on these profiles.

We also provide financial assistance to our birth mothers. The financial assistance we provide varies from person to person, but we help with pregnancy-related expenses like maternity clothes, food, shelter, and transportation. Our goal is to make this process as stress-free as possible, and we will do whatever we can to minimize whatever stressors we can.

We also ensure that you have adequate medical care throughout your pregnancy. We want you to have a healthy pregnancy, and we want this to be a positive experience for you. Making the decision to place your baby for adoption is difficult enough; it doesn’t need to be harder than it already is.

Does My Baby’s Father Have to be Involved?

Whether or not your child’s father is involved in your adoption process depends on the type of relationship you two have. If we cannot contact him, he has no right to receive any information about your decision to place your newborn for adoption. If you are married, or the father is listed on the birth certificate, he can choose to participate in the adoption process, but you certainly do not need his permission.

While this article isn’t entirely comprehensive, these are just some of our services to make your adoption journey easier. It’s important that you take care of yourself and your baby. There’s nothing wrong with choosing adoption. It is an honorable decision, and you are giving another family the opportunity to grow or start a family.

Adoption Choices of Florida is here to help you during your adoption journey. All you have to do is pick up the phone or go to our website. We’re here for you!
