What if the Adoptive Parents Don’t Want Your Baby?

As a woman considering adoption, there are many fears that go along with it. There are so many what-ifs when it comes to adoption and all of those thoughts are perfectly normal. Having anxiety about adoption is a natural response to something that is a massive life change. Know that during all of this, you aren’t alone and you aren’t the first to question anything.

Here at Adoption Choices of Florida, we understand that anxiety of the unknown can make your head spin, but we will do our best to help ease those fears. So, let’s look at what happens if the adoptive family you’ve chosen decides they don’t want your baby after all.

Adoptive Parents Can Change Their Mind

As sad as it is, adoptive parents can change their minds when it comes to adoption. That is fairly rare though, and many birth mothers don’t have an issue with this. However, it does happen and it can be a huge shock to the system. What do you do after they decide that they don’t want your baby after all?

You simply find another parent or parents that want to take their place. You’ll have to go through the interview process once more and select an adoptive family. It can be stressful to have to go through it a second time but talk to your adoption caseworker to see which families fit your idea of the right family for your child. Maybe you have changed your idea of what is right, and that is okay. Just talk it over with your adoption caseworker.

Remember, just because they changed their mind doesn’t mean you did something wrong. There are a number of reasons why this can happen. Let it be known that it was never because you did something wrong. Nor is it because they are unfit to be parents. They have to go through an intense screening process to even make it through to being on the list of adoptive parents you can pick from.
